Final Fantasy VIII: Convert PSX Save to Steam Save

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is now available for purchase on Steam. It enhances on the original game by adding updated HD character models and useful features like the ability to speed up the game or disable random encounters.

So, if you have an old save from the PlayStation 1 (PSX) and want to continue playing this game in high definition graphics, you must convert it to the Remastered Steam Version.

Here’s how to do it. First, you’ll need a program called Hyne.

Resources:

In FF8 PC 2013, saves are located in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VIII Steam\user_*, you can edit *.ff8 files with Hyne 1.8 and the metadata.xml file will be automatically updated.

Hyne can also open slots, like the standard FF8 PC version. If you have several versions of FF8 installed, you can choose your version in “Settings -> PC Version”.

You can update manually the metadata.xml file in the “File -> Sign saves for the Cloud…” menu. (Since Hyne 1.8.2)

In FF8 Remaster PC edition, saves are located in: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\Steam\(numbers)\game_data\user\saves

  • File save format is : slot1_save02.ff8, slot1_save03.ff8… As a result, you can export from Hyne using these names.

  • Don’t use slot1_save01.ff8 because it’s AUTOSAVE slot.
